Dogue De Bordeaux - Origin
The Origin of the Dogue de Bordeaux is not precisely known. It is argued that the breed originated from the Tibetan Mastiff. In fact, all Molosser-type dogs are believed to have the Tibetan Mastiff as their ancestor. Molosser-type dogs display similar personality and appearance features. They are all huge and awesome, and are characterized by outstanding working qualities. It is no wonder that their roots are closely interlinked.
According to a popular belief, the Dogue de Bordeaux is a relative of the Bullmastiff. There is much speculation about which breed was the foundation for the other one. Some people believe that the Bullmastiff has Dogue de Bordeaux blood. Others state that the Dogue de Bordeaux was developed by introducing the gene pool of the Bullmastiff. It may be that both breeds appeared at the same time. What is certain, the Dogue de Bordeaux has close ties to the Bullmastiff.
Dogue De Bordeaux - Functions
Yet, this does not clarify the origin of the Doge de Bordeaux much. There is a supposition that the breed is the descendent of a dog that was bred in France long ago. These dogs were used as guardians, fighters, and had a variety of other uses. The Dogue de Bordeaux physical qualities and personality traits allowed the dog to be used in innumerous activities. Therefore, breeders stressed their strength and good temperament qualities rather than appearance.
By the middle of the 19th century, the Dogue de Bordeaux was widely spread in France. However, the breed was not yet well developed. Dogs were of different sizes and color patterns. Some Dogue de Bordeaux had scissors bite, whereas others --undershot. In 1963, a dog named Magentas won a show held in Paris. It represented a group of dogs that had same general type. The breed was named the "Dogue de Bordeaux" to honor the region from which the dog came.
The first breed standard appeared in 1896. This helped breeders figure out the type of the dog to which they were supposed to aim at in the breedings. The breed started to be popularized in Europe and the United States. It experienced a boom in popularity in the 1980s due to a movie "Turner and Hooch" success. Nowadays, Dogue de Bordeaux are popular dogs, even though some people consider them dangerous.
